The Best Memes of 2015 (So Far)

By Christopher Cox on October 3, 2015

2015 has been an eventful year for those who love to explore the depths of the Internet. In every dark corner lies a viral post that we are ashamed to enjoy, that we kick ourselves for smiling at whenever it frequently appears on our screen.

Despite the shame that comes from loving memes, we share them regardless, allowing them to invade the feeds of everyone who happens to (unfortunately) follow us.

For those wondering what’s been going on in the cyber world over the past year, I’ve constructed a timeline of my favorite memes of 2015 for your guilty sharing pleasure. View them and bask in all of their worn out trivial glory.

January: George Glass Meme

The George Glass Meme.

This moment has widely been used as a reaction image on a multitude of posts on Tumblr. It is taken from the Brady Bunch movie A Very Brady Sequel, which I personally find to be much funnier than the actual show.

This particular scene is from when Jan discusses her new boyfriend, George Glass, who she desperately names on the spot after scanning surrounding objects in the room for inspiration. Marcia, instantly suspicious, responds with a snarky “Sure, Jan.”

This has then been posted as a response to what people believe are lies, such as a tweet of Donald Trump’s where he claims he will make America great again.

February: The Dress

Black and Blue vs. White and Gold: A World Divided.

Everyone that had a pulse in February was exposed to this viral phenomenon. It was impossible to get away from; my mother initially sent it to me over text asking what I saw, then it appeared all over my Facebook newsfeed, and the next day professors facilitated debates about it in class.

People were taking sides, plunging the nation into momentary turmoil. The dress was later confirmed to be blue and black, so everyone can finally rest easy.

March: Iggy Azalea Hair

Iggy Azalea’s braid incorporated into the movie Ice Age.

After Iggy Azalea’s attendance at the 2015 Grammy’s, her interesting choice of hairstyle became a meme for weeks. Many posts were created and circulated around social media comparing her to anything from a loaf of bread to an acorn in the image above.

April: Smiling Face with Smiling Eyes Emoji

Nicki using the emoji to express her anger about not being nominated.

This emoji began to be used in excess on Twitter, originating its use as a sarcastic manifestation of inner disappointment. The meme involves initially stating something dissatisfying, embarrassing, or sad then following the statement with a load of smiling face emojis. It has since permeated all other forms of social media as a form of creatively illustrating irritable and relatable events.

May: Charlie Charlie Challenge

Charlie Charlie, are you there?

The Charlie Charlie Challenge is a suburban teenager’s attempt to summon a Mexican demon by balancing two pencils on top of each other on a piece of paper with potential responses. Participants wait to see if the spirit will move the pencil toward any of the squares. It’s like a Ouija board on a budget!

This initially began as a challenge that people attempted, but soon turned into a full on internet meme with funny commentary and parodies like the one above. “New phone who dis” is also a meme from a few years ago that’s meant to mimic the response of people who get texts after getting a new phone.

So technically the photo above is like memeception, a meme within a meme.

June: Dan Nicky your Bobbie s

The Instagram comment that changed the world.

This one originated from a user’s comment on one of Nicki Minaj’s Instagram posts. He attempts to be saying “Damn Nicki, your boobies” but instead ends up using three different names, none of which are hers. The meme involves quoting this erroneous “compliment” for a humorous result and has led to many amusing variations such as “Dan Nicky your Personality.”

July: Astrology Photo Labeling

Which one are you?

This meme is a derivative of the various other astrology posts that have risen to peak popularity over the past year. It begins with a photo of multiple entities and then is edited, labeling each with a sign of the zodiac. I’m the Scorpio girl who ran out of fucks to give in the first row — so accurate.

August: Miley, What’s Good?

She just got served.

Damn, nobody saw this one coming. After criticizing Minaj for her Twitter tirade in a New York Times interview, Miley was greeted with this phrase at the 2015 VMA’s. Nicki Minaj had no time for tomfoolery, and went straight for the kill after receiving an award.

This iconic moment in history made waves around social media, leading to the popularization of the phrase, “What’s good?” This post is one of my favorite uses of the meme.

September: Taylor Swift Copyright

Well that’s one way to avoid getting sued.

This one is probably my favorite. The copyright information in parenthesis is in reference to the number 22 which is one of Taylor Swift’s signature songs from 2012. This insertion is poking fun at how Taylor Swift attempted to trademark commonly used phrases from her songs such as “this sick beat.”

This became the basis for a slew of posts that would include phrases that also happened to be Taylor Swift song titles, followed by copyright information.
